Cavalry

The majority of the

Roman cavalry

came from the non citizen provinces. Recruited from those provinces that had a strong cavalry reputation. They were formed into

Alae, meaning wing, which was formed into 16 Turmae

with each turmae comprising 32 men commanded by a decurion.

As with the auxiliary infantry their reward for service was the granting to them of

Roman citizenship
