Roman Legionary

Legionary

The legionary was a professional solder.

To join the army the potential recruit had to prove his citizenship, for only citizens could serve in the legions, and be physically fit. We think they had to be over 18 years of age.  If he passed this selection process he would begin 3 months of basic training known as probatio. If he successfully completed probatio the recruit would be posted to a legion, failure would however result in him being rejected for army service. He would be expected to serve for 25 years.

His equipment comprised an iron or bronze helmet, body armour of either chain or plate, a military belt, a shield, sword, dagger, javelin and boots.
